It seems that all of the recent research done on the birth control Yaz and Yasmin is pointing to one thing: a higher risk of blood clots (venous thromboembolism, or VTE). A study done by Health Canada showed that women who use drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives have a 1.5 to 3 times higher risk of developing a blood clot than other birth controls.A Blood clot, although rare, is a known side effect of oral contraceptives however the cases are much higher in oral contraceptives with drospirenone.
There is an ongoing class action lawsuit against Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin for the misleading information they have given to women about their product. It seems that Bayer has not been completely up front about the risk factors of their oral contaceptive, stating that women who take their pill are at the same risk as any other woman taking an oral contraceptive.
Research, however, is finding that women are in fact at a much higher risk for developing blood clots while on Yaz or Yasmin than on other oral contraceptives.
