New York Times: Yaz birth control health problems raise concerns

The cases allege that Yaz can cause a rise in blood potassium which in turns slows the heart rate, allowing clots to form in the bloodstream.

According to www.ClinicalTrials.gov, the Center for Epidemiology and Health Research is conducting a study on women who have been taking oral contraceptives, also known as birth control pills, which contain Drospirenone. Found in Yaz birth control, and it's generics Yasmin and Ocella, Drospirenone is a drug that has been shown to increase the risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT, also known as blood clots), stroke, and other serious health problems, according to the Yaz product information. Our Yaz complications lawyers have helped women who have suffered from these serious health problems while they've been on Yaz birth control.

Bayer Corporation, the maker of Yaz, has been under scrutiny for not sufficiently warning patients of the dangers of the drug in their advertisements.

In response to this scrutiny, the Center for Epidemiology and Health Research of Germany, in collaboration with Bayer, is studying approximately 80,000 women who have been taking ocral contraceptives that contain Drospirenone. The study is called the International Active Surveillance Study of Women Taking Oral Contraceptives. They are currently accepting participants.

"compares the short- and long-term risks of a 24-day regimen of a drospirenone-containing oral contraceptive with the risks of established oral contraceptives in a study population that is representative for the actual users of the individual preparations."

A 41-year-old woman from New Jersey was given samples of Yaz birth control from a local womens' clinic on March 6, 2009.

Shortly thereafter, on May 28, 2009, the woman was admitted to the hospital where she was treated for a pulmonary embolism while taking Yaz birth control, or blood clot in the lung. She remained in the hospital for seven days, and now must take the blood thinners Heparin and Coumadin.

The woman must also make weekly trips to the hospital to have her protimes checked.

The woman was only taking Yaz birth control for one month before she suffered the stroke. The lawsuit, which was filed against Bayer, the maker of Yaz birth control, was filed in federal court on Monday. The lawsuit alleges that Bayer aggressively promoted Yaz birth control, and was deceiving to consumers on the risks that can arise from a new version of dropsirenone, which is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone.

According to Reuters, a motion was filed on July 24, 2009 to consolidate and transfer all Yasmin and Yaz product liability litigation to Chief Judge James G. Carr of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The motion was filed before the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation in Washington, D.C.
The lawsuits involving Yaz and Yasmin birth controls name Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation and other Bayer related companies as the defendants in the case.

The alleged side effects of Yaz and Yasmin can be fatal. So if they are proved to be caused by these birth control drugs, it is certainly not a stretch of the imagination to think that Yaz and Yasmin will be recalled from the market. Yet the FDA has given no indication that it intends to do so. In the end, it is their decision whether or not to recall Yaz and Yasmin.

One might think that Yaz and Yasmin are sure to be recalled given the serious and fatal side effects some are associated with the widely popular birth control drugs, but as Gillin also points out, “We saw similar fatal side effects with the birth control patch, Ortho Evra, but we did not see an official FDA recall.
