New safety information revealing the increased risk of blood clots in women has been added to the labels of Yaz and Yasmin. Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceutics has announced an updated label will be put on its products in the European Union (EU) as well, following the results of four epidemiological studies.

There were four studies done on the drugs Yaz and Yasmin, which resulted in the following conclusions:

Birth control pills, which contain the hormone drospirenone, are associated with a notable increased risk to women.
These risks include blood clots in the veins, which can lead to a pulmonary embolism or stroke.
Bayer, the maker of these two birth controls, found the risk of blood clots in Yaz and Yazmin users comparable to the risk found for women who use birth control pills with the same hormone.

The FDA has been negotiating with Bayer to update labels for Yaz and Yasmin in the United States. The new label should clearly outline the dangerous associations between the birth control pills and the increased risk of blood clots in women. Currently, the suggested change to the label information has not been released.

Stage Actress Files Suit Against Bayer After Yaz-Related Illness | Yaz Injury Lawsuit Attorneys

Brenda Hamilton, a stage actress who performs in the Broadway show Wicked, has filed a lawsuit against Bayer. She alleges that Bayer's Yaz birth-control pill caused her to have a stroke at age 27. Hamilton had no history of health problems before she was affected by the stroke in May 2007.

Hamilton's suit says that Bayer was aware of the fact that Yaz posed greater health risks than other birth-control pills but withheld that information from doctors and patients. In addition to the risk of strokes, Yaz users are also said to be at a higher risk for blood clots.

About 1,100 lawsuits have been filed in the United States against Bayer because of health complications caused by Yaz. The pharmaceutical company has routinely defended Yaz, which accounted for $1.5 billion in sales in 2009.

2003

Stop prancing. After five young and otherwise healthy Dutch women die of pulmonary embolisms after taking Yasmin for a short amount of time, a team of researchers in the Netherlands led by Dr. Kees van Grootheest, who is not a sectional sofa, published a paper in the British Journal of Medicine titled "Thromboembolism associated with the new contraceptive Yasmin." Again, this paper looked at five (not five thousand) women. Later that year, scientists from Spain published a similarly-themed paper called "Transient ischaemic attack [a terrifying stroke] associated with the new contraceptive Yasmin."

"Sudden death" is added to Yasmin's side effects, and everyone starts PMS-ing over it.

2004

Good news! A Bayer-sponsored Europe-wide study found that there was no statistically significant risk of stroke or cardiovascularly-related death among women who took drospirenone-containing birth control pills as compared to women who took previous generations of progestin-containing birth control pills. On the one hand, Bayer is looking to acquire Yasmin from Berlex's parent company (which they finally do in 2006). On the other hand, well, sure, maybe that raises some conflict-of-interest questions -- but still, it's science, with statistics and everything.

2005

Good news that isn't tainted by corporate interests! A team of scientists from from the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh (and funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute) find that all androgenic and nonandrogenic progestin-containing birth control pills yield "a similar and significant reduction in ovarian cancer risk."

Scientists at Berlex Laboratories formulate a new synthetic progestin called drospirenone. It's hailed as a "third generation" oral contraceptive that "has the potential to reduce body weight, blood pressure" and "has positive effects on weight and lipid levels," all while relieving "menstrually related symptoms." All the Berlex scientists do super-exploding fist-bumps and shout, "Huzzah!" several times in unison. [Ed. note: Unverified]

2001

The FDA approves Yasmin, the world's first drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol combination birth control pill. The Journal of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine publishes a study saying that the Yasmin cocktail does everything the Berlex study purported, and it gives women lighter, shorter and less painful periods. Ladies rejoice.

Lousiana woman sues makers of Yaz birth control over health probems

An Orleans Parish woman is suing Bayer Corp. after being diagnosed with a multiple pulmonary emboli she believes was caused by birth control pills.

Arguing the corporations failed to warn of the risks, Heather Gillespie filed suit against Bayer Corp., Bayer Healthcare, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp., Bayer Health Care Pharmaceuticals, Berlex, Berlex Laboratories, Bayer Schering Pharma AG and Bayer Healthcare AG June 8 in federal court in New Orleans.

Gillespie says she was prescribed and took YAZ/Yasmin daily from October 2008 through at least July 2009 and has suffered multiple pulmonary emboli among other adverse reactions.

Gillespie accuses Bayer of ignoring the correlation between the use of the drugs and the increased risk of permanent and debilitating side effects.

"Defendants have been issued warnings by the FDA at least three times - in 2003, 2008 and 2009 - for misleading the public through the use of ads which overstate the efficacy of YAZ/Yasmin and minimize serious risks associated with the drug," the lawsuit reads.

The plaintiff says Bayer is liable under the Louisiana Products Liability Act.

Gillespie is seeking damages for medical expense, physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, physical disfigurement, physical impairment, loss of earnings, loss of earning capacity, interest and court costs.

New Orleans attorneys Allan Berger and Andrew J. Geiger of Allan Berger & Associates are representing Gillespie.

U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt is assigned to the case.

It's alleged in the suits that from 2004 through 2008 Yaz and Yasmin have caused more than 50 deaths. Some of the deaths occurred in women as young as 17. Bayer has refused to release any figures on side effects linked to contraceptives. Apparently, its reluctance is so as "not to make its customers uneasy."

Yaz advertisements in the United States also claimed that it would treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Bayer was cited by the FDA, for deceptive claims, in October 2008. The ads, according to the FDA, were overstating the benefits of Yaz while distracting viewers from the risks.

With the flood of cases, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) recently joined cases involving Yaz and Yasmin into an MDL for pretrial proceedings. When the JPML issued its Transfer Order on October 1, 2009, it noted that both products liability cases involving the drugs and cases brought as part of a punitive class action of purchasers who bought the pills based upon misleading advertising would be included in the MDL.

The JPML stated that the products liability action cases and the punitive class action "share factual questions" about the drsp-containing pills, and all seek to have Bayer be held responsible for harm from purchase and use of the oils. In addition, the court noted that the products liability actions reference the advertisements at issue in the putative class action, and that some of the plaintiffs bringing products liability actions "also allege economic injury and violation of consumer protection statues."

Bayer heavily invested in marketing the pills, hiking its advertising budget for Yaz 253% from 2006 to 2007, for a total budget of $75.8 million. Their only product receiving more advertising dollars was Aleve. The campaign has been highly successful, with the Bayer0manufactured pills being the best-selling oral contraceptives in this country. The company earned about $1.8 billion worldwide in 2008, with over $600 million of those sales in the United States. In October 2009, Bayer announced that sales for the pills rose 4.6% over the previous quarter.

While the advertising connected with consumers, the FDA found that the marketing claims had not been borne out by research. In the last six years, the FDA has warned manufacturers about the language of the advertisements in three letters - in 2003, 2008, and January 2009 - noting that the advertising for the pills overstated the effectiveness and minimized dangers. The FDA specifically expressed concern that the risks were being minimized, by failing to communicate risk adequately, and that marketing suggested the pills were appropriate treatment for PMS and could result in acne-free skin. In fact they have only been found effective in treating a severe form of PMS called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and for the treatment of moderate acne.

When the birth control pills Yasmin and Yaz hit the market a few years ago, they were touted as the new frontier of contraception drugs, which could not only prevent pregnancy but also cure acne and pre-menstrual syndrome. Like most birth control pills, Yaz and Yasmin are "combination" pills, containing both estrogen and a progestin hormone to suppress ovulation, fertilization, and implantation.

It is the unique progestin in the pills, desperinone (drsp), which was behind the hype that the drugs provided benefits beyond pregnancy prevention. However, drsp has recently become the center of attention for another reason - its link to possible health problems.

Initially produced by Berlex Laboratories in 2001, Yasmin was the first birth control pill to contain drsp. Berlex later introduced Yaz using the same drsp hormone, but with less estrogen. In 2006, Bayer purchased Berlex and began an aggressive marketing campaign for the pills. In July 2008, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. introduced a generic version named Ocella. Since the drsp-containing pills have been on the market, the advertising has primarily focused on them being "birth control plus," addressing acne and PMS, in addition to providing contraception.

Some 1,100 lawsuits have been filed against Bayer HealthCare claiming health risks from its Yasmin and Yaz brand birth control pills, according to the L.A. Times. But is there any evidence behind the claimed problems, which include dangerous blood clots, strokes, heart attacks and gallbladder disease?

Well, nothing definitive - research on the effects of the purported culprit in Yaz, a synthetic progestin called drospirenone, is mixed. "Some studies have found drospirenone to pose no greater health risk than other birth control pills; some studies show a sixfold greater risk of getting blood clots, even in young, healthy women," the LAT says. Bayer says the drugs are safe and effective.

Yaz, on the market since 2006, has become the top-selling oral contraceptive in the U.S., the paper says, citing IMS Health data. As one of the "fourth generation" birth control pills, it's supposed to have fewer side effects than earlier drugs. And, it's FDA-approved to treat very severe PMS, officially called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), but not the more mild forms. Last year Bayer entered into a settlement with the FDA and changed its advertising to emphasize that fact. Earlier ads mentioned symptoms that may occur in any form of PMS, such irritability, bloating, headaches and acne.

It is marketed not only as a contraceptive pill, but as a proven treatment for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition with severe emotional and physical premenstrual symptoms. Yaz is also marketed as an effective treatment for moderate acne.

However, Yaz poses a particular health hazard, as studies indicate, because one of its two primary ingredients, drospirenone, is a diuretic, which can cause an increase in potassium levels in the blood and lead to hyperkalemia, which causes heart rhythm disturbances. Bayer AG, Germany's largest drugmaker, was accused in a lawsuit of ignoring health risks of the contraceptive Yaz and advertising the drug as safe to boost sales.

The Yasmin family of birth-control pills, known as Yaz and Yasmin, carries a four times increased risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism compared with other contraceptives, according to the suit, filed today in St. Catharines, Ontario, by two women. They seek class-action, or group, status to represent all women who used the drugs.

Yaz and Yasmin were Bayer's top-selling drugs in 2008, bringing in about $1.8 billion, a 17 percent increase from 2007. More than 2 million prescriptions were written for the drugs in Canada last year, indicating hundreds of thousands of women were using them, said Matthew Baer, the plaintiffs' lawyer.

"It's a failure-to-warn case," Baer said. "People need to be aware that if they choose to use the drugs they have a four times greater risk" of health problems.

Bayer stands behind the safety of Yaz and Yasmin, the company said in an e-mailed statement.

"Venous thrombosis is an unfortunate and rare side effect for women who take low-dose oral contraceptives," the company said. Those risks have been publicized in studies sponsored by Bayer and are reflected in prescribing information of all combination oral contraceptive products, the company said.

The incredible number of lawsuits involving Yaz birth control has generated talk about a potential recall. Even so, in the face of 25,000 potential lawsuits and censure from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for overstating the effectiveness of Yaz / Yasmin, manufacturer Bayer continues to sell the product.

The Indianapolis Star reported on 2/8/10 that more than 50 women in the Indianapolis area have filed lawsuits claiming that the product has caused them serious health issues. Some of the women reported blood clots and pulmonary embolisms in their legs and lungs. Several required surgery to remove their gallbladders. Some suffered strokes that left them with lifelong disabilities.

Thirty-seven-year-old Kimberly A. Johnson of Madison, a mother of two, launched one such lawsuit. She took oral contraceptives on and off through the years and had been using Yasmin for about three months in 2007 when she developed back and chest pain.

"I was short of breath just before Thanksgiving that year, and I was having sharp pain when I took deep breaths," she told the Indianapolis Star. "The worst was when I was laying down at night. I thought I was having a heart attack. I thought I was going to die."

Tests soon revealed that Johnson had suffered numerous blood clots in both lungs. Currently on blood thinners and off the birth control, Johnson is hopeful that the blood clots won't return.

Johnson was one of many consumers allegedly influenced by a $20 million marketing campaign undertaken by Bayer from February through July of last year. The ads claimed that the contraceptive products provided health benefits in addition to those approved by the FDA. In response, the FDA ordered that Bayer run a counter-campaign correcting its earlier claims.

Yasmin has been on the market since 2001, and Yaz was introduced in 2006. Both contraceptives contain "fourth generation" steroidal formulations for oral contraceptives based on drospirenone, which the suits claim may lead to high levels of potassium. The resulting medical condition, known as hyperkalemia, can cause arterial blood clots, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, liver and kidney failure, rapid heartbeat, arrhythmias and other conditions including death, according to the suits.

Bayer officials said the contraceptives are safe when used properly and noted that all oral contraceptives carry warnings of possible side effects.

Found in Yaz birth control, and it's generics Yasmin and Ocella, Drospirenone is a drug that has been shown to increase the risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT, also known as blood clots), stroke, and other serious health problems, according to the Yaz product information.
